The spread for the Sajian Desa Buffet was rather extensive, covering numerous culinary genres which are iconic of the various communities in Melaka. So here’s part of the dishes which caught my eye… there are actually many more dishes on the buffet menu than what was listed here! First up is Sambal Udang Petai

Apart from the buffet dishes, there are also 10 live cooking stations outdoors by the scenic Melaka River… the one which I was drawn to immediately was the station for char kway teow…

Curious on what I ate? Here’s round one! The rendang was very flavourful and so was the fried barramundi. I finally figured out what “tiga rasa” stood for after tasting the fish… pedas, manis, asam! A sweet, sour and spicy sauce! The leg of lamb was so so so tender I regretted not having more tummy real estate to go for second rounds, because there is simply too many dishes to try! I love the sourish chutneys and raita to accompany the leg of lamb. Satay was pretty decent with the highlight being the sauce. But my absolute favorite was the paru, so well cooked, so so yummy. It is da bomb!!!

Then I took a switch and sampled other dishes. The chicken rice was pretty decent. Especially love the chili. The pie tee was very good too, just like the ones we had for lunch in the afternoon. The sukun and pisang goreng was so crisp on the outside and soft and fluffy within because they were just freshly fried! But the true gem was really the char kway teow… packed with wok hei and so so amazing because the chef who helmed the wok was actually a Malay chef! Very very impressed…

There was also a good spread for dessert. For those who favour something more “intercontinental”, there is an array of jellies and custards, alongside some really good cakes.

For something more colloquial, since it is the “balik kampung” theme after all, there is an “iced-desserts” station where one can customise one’s chendol, ais kacang or ais bak poh etc!

The most popular dessert station much surely be the crepe station where these paper-thin pancakes are made on the spot before being smeared with a good dollop of fresh durian pulp! If you are really lucky, you would get the Chef Ryan Poon, the executive chef of Casa del Rio Melaka’s F&B arm to prep the durian crepe for you!

And after being all well fed and watered from the Sajian Desa Buffet Dinner, my favorite activity was to take a leisurely stroll around the compounds of Casa del Rio Melaka, enjoy the gentle breeze caressing your cheeks. You can even venture a bit further to walk along the Melaka River which by now would be romantically lit with beautiful lights on both banks.

Don’t forget to stop by the foyer-concierge area to admire these artistically crafted miniatures of traditional houses representative of the various states in Malaysia. They are built by Cik Baser Ali, a resident of Kampung Morten just slightly further up the Melaka River…

The Sajian Desa Buffet Dinner runs only during this time of the year to coincide with the Muslim Fasting Month. It runs from 27th May to 24th June 2017 nightly from 6.30 pm to 10 pm at RM98 nett per pax with 50% off for senior citizens and young children. Credit card holders enjoy an additional 15% off which is a really good deal. Every 5 dining vouchers purchased entitles one to receive 1 additional free voucher and on top of that, there are also prizes with value totally up to RM15000 worth of hotel stays to be won with every dining voucher.
